Oak House farm news
Thank you for all of the kind comments that we received on our first anniversary last week. We had a really busy week in the shop and are looking forward to seeing lots of customers again this week. We are ramping up production as fast as we can to meet demand. We would also like to thank anybody who helped with a rain dance!!
Profile
This week: It could be You!
Most of the cattle that we keep on the farm are Red Polls. The Red Poll is Suffolk’s native cattle breed and part of the Suffolk trinity (together with the Suffolk sheep and Suffolk horse).
Red Polls were originally a cross between the Suffolk dun and the Norfolk horn and have the benefit that they are naturally polled (no horns).
Red Polls are a dual purpose cattle breed producing both good quality milk and beef. In the years after the 2nd world war, they were one of the main breeds used for milk in the UK, falling out of favour when higher yielding Frisians were introduced.
After a period of decline, Red Polls have staged a recovery and there are now about 3000 breeding females in the UK. They make excellent suckler cows, being easy calving (we rarely have to help), with plenty of milk and with good mothering instinct.
